A workflow is a sequence of steps and transitions that an item goes through in its lifecycle. Generally, a workflow represents a business process.

Each workflow is associated with a particular project and particular item type, and is set up on a per-template basis. In order to enable the workflow mechanism for a template, you need to check the "Enable workflow" option when creating a template. This option cannot be altered after a template has been created.
